A Ford patent that envisions remote keyless entry operating together with smartphones and a biometric database has been approved.Originally filed in 2012 but only approved on 20 January, the system the patent describes would use a biometric sensor featuring on a keyless entry device, such as a smartphone.”The method would allow for one-way secure communication ߪ and provide added functionality and tracking devices”.The Ford patent adds that facial, iris, retinal and voiceprint data are all options for the biometric data used for access.Data would be collected and stored on the smartphone and then sent to the vehicle. Family members can be given permission to access the vehicle by submitting biometric data to identify themselves. The biometric access also raises the possibility of personalising the driver experience, for example choosing a driver's favourite music, navigation and climate settings.Earlier this year, an iris recognition device developed by EyeLock was integrated into a 3-d printed vehicle developed by the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
