Biometrics expert Anil K Jain, professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University, has said researchers in India should develop fingerprint and face recognition solutions for ATMs.Speaking at the 103rd Indian Science Congress, Jain said tech advances had created new avenues for deployment of biometrics, and pointed out that face and fingerprint recognition techniques were more secure and foolproof than PIN numbers, reports The Hindu.Jain also urged the scientists to develop biometric applications in surveillance.Professor of Computer Science in University of Mysore D.S. Guru told The Hindu that he envisioned a solution that included a fingerprint sensor on a card and facial recognition in an ATM booth.”The camera atop the ATM will recognize your face. So will the fingerprint sensor on your ATM card. If these two biometrics do not match, the ATM will reject the transaction,” Prof. Guru said.In December, a committee set up by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to prepare a five-year financial inclusion strategy also suggested that all credit accounts be linked to a unique biometric identifier such as the Aadhaar unique identity number to help identify multiple loan accounts and prevent borrowers from becoming over-indebted.”This will not only be useful in identifying multiple accounts, but will also help in mitigating the overall indebtedness of individuals who are often lured into multiple borrowings without being aware of its consequences,” the committee recommended.
