Security Document World talks to Dr Roland Gutmann, ISO/IEC JTC1/SC17/WG10/TF 4 Leader Document Security, Bundesdruckerei GmbH, Germany.Dr Roland Gutmann is a speaker at SDW 2015. What will your presentation be covering at this year's SDW 2015 event? An overview of the actual state of driving licenses worldwide and in the EU, and the need for higher security due to technical developments in homemade designing, printing and lamination techniques. To achieve this, an international harmonization is necessary for better protection against manipulation and fraud. I will show networks and working groups who work in this field and present minimum security requirements for protecting the document and the data of the document holder. Why do you think this is an important topic?Manipulations of driving licences are not only a data security problem, but also very important for road safety. People who are not qualified or trained to drive can cause a lot of damage to the public. Furthermore, in the case of legal withdrawal of driving licences due to (repeated) driving while drunk, people should not be able to create or get hold of an unofficial driving license, by means of re-engineering or manipulation of valid documents. In addition, the use of licenses as an ID-document in some countries opens new potential dangers in the field of identity theft, with various consequences and social damages. Finally, a harmonisation of the driving license will make life much easier for the official as well as private usage, i.e. recognition, control and verification. If there is one thing you would like our attendees to take away from your presentation, what would that be?To recognize the importance of a secure driving licence and appreciate an up-to-date and state of the art driving licence as tool for customer friendly and safe storage of personal data, enabling various future application like, age verification, classification and identification. What do you envisage the burning topics being in your field over the next 12 months? The need to convince officials to follow the standardization work performed by an international ISO expert group and the replacement of particularly low level secured driving licenses by ISO 18013-compliant documents. For more details and to read about other speakers, see the full SDW 2015 conference programme.
