Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) at the Port of Virginia has begun a biometric access trial that allows truckers access through fingerprint scans.In a statement, the port said that the system asks drivers to swipe his or her TWIC card, and that their identity is then confirmed by a fingerprint reader.A successful scan will lift the gate arm, granting access to the terminal. Unsuccessful scans may be repeated. If a driver is unable to complete the scan, he or she should press the kiosk call button for further assistance.”This technology will provide a higher level of safety and security on our terminal, in addition to improving velocity through the gates”, said the port in a statement.The port plans to expanded the trial to multiple lanes in the coming weeks.
