Apple has patented a system whereby its devices could gather the biometric data of users who had fraudulently tried to access to iPhone or iPads. The plan would be to store an unauthorized user's biometric information to boost security. Potentially, this data could then be transmitted anywhere or used in later legal proceedings. For example, server-side systems could potentially cross-reference fingerprint data and photos with an online database of known users.Revealed in Apple Insider, Apple's invention covers “Biometric capture for unauthorized user identification”.Using different constraints, varying levels of capture could be set. For instance, a single or multiple failed authentication triggers could be used to capture fingerprint data and a picture of the user.Other data can augment the biometric information, for example time stamps, device location, speed, air pressure, audio data and more, all collected and logged as background operations.
