National Australia Bank has become the first financial institution in the country to roll out tamper-proof, encrypted identity verification at select branches in Queensland.
The system allows customers to transfer information directly from Queensland’s mobile driver’s licence app to NAB’s systems without physical documentation or manual data entry.
Completing a check, customers open their digital licence and approve an automated data request, transmitting their verified credentials straight from their personal device to the bank via encrypted data exchange.
Queensland was selected as the launch pad because its mobile driver’s licence infrastructure meets the internationally recognised encryption standards required by NAB’s technical architecture, and the bank intends to expand the verification service across other states and territories as compatible digital identity systems become available nationwide.
Claire Righetti, NAB Executive for Onboarding & Identity Management, said “With just a few taps, customers can share tamper-proof, verifiable credentials directly from their mobile device, which is more secure and faster than manual data entry or using physical documents”.
Building upon the bank’s existing security measures, including biometric selfie-matching for customer onboarding, is part of their broader strategy to counter AI-driven fraud and scam operations.
NAB has previously enabled its ‘Take a Selfie’ biometric verification feature into onboarding processes to confirm a customer matches their identity document.
“The threat environment is constantly changing which means we need to continually innovate to protect our customers,” according to NAB Head of Identity Management Si Phan.
“We know identity theft is often the first step criminals use to carry out scams and fraud, so adopting digital identity technology gives our customers an easier way to verify their identity and helps us protect them and the financial system from increasingly sophisticated threats”.
