UL has announced that it has contributed to the specifications of the second generation digital tachograph, which were published by the European Commission on 26 May 2016 as Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/799.Tachographs are designed to help enforce the rules governing driving times and rest periods, to prevent driver fatigue and guarantee fair competition and road safety. Regulation (EU) N° 165/2014 on recording equipment in road transport provides the ground rules for the second generation digital tachograph. Over the past few years, UL has been working with the European Commission's Joint Research Center and a number of other organisations to write the technical specifications for this regulation. UL's mandate was to improve driver protection by providing enhanced anti-fraud security mechanisms. The new specifications will need to be implemented in all digital tachographs from 2019 and from this point all new trucks will need to have one installed.
