U.S. passport support in the Apple wallet app will be available in the iOD 26 later this year, according to reports.

Currently, Apple Wallet can store private credentials and some public digital IDs, but access remains limited to certain types of identification and regions that have issued digital identities. As big tech companies are in total control of their wallets, the dynamics between private and public sector can sometimes complicate public credentials being included in the Apple wallet and vice versa. This means each state in the U.S. must establish a partnership with Apple.

Since September 2025, individual state digital identities have been accepted at participating TSA checkpoints, and in June TSA announced they will accept digital passports.

The UK government has announced plans to introduce digital driver licences, which will be available through an upcoming government wallet rather than private digital wallets like the Apple Wallet.

Right now, the only states supporting digital IDs in the Apple Wallet include: Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Ohio, North Dakota, Puerto Rico, New Mexico, Montana, Iowa, and Georgia.

Support for passports, when it does come into effect, will allow Apple users complete storage of their digital IDs, including state IDs and driver licences, in one place to use as IDs, although they will not be eligible for international travel in or out of the U.S.

All U.S. passports are standardised, regardless of which state you live in as states have no role in issuing passports.

The change to Apple’s website was very minor however it has confirmed that Apple is eager to get onboard with the standard U.S. passport.
