US biometrics technology and human interface firm Synaptics has revealed an ultra-slim fingerprint sensor that can be mounted on the side of smartphones or tablets – meaning users will need only one hand for authentication.Measuring just 2.8mm in depth, the VFS6170 sensor can be incorporated into the side, volume rocker button of smart devices. This means that front screens and home buttons can be used for other design features.”At Synaptics, striving for the ultimate user experience is at the core of what we do,” said Ritu Favre, senior vice president and general manager of Biometrics Products Division, Synaptics.”As the adoption rate for fingerprint ID technology continues to increase and expand across broader markets, our slim slide sensor solution demonstrates our ability to broaden our product line and address the growing needs of our OEM partners.”Because the sensor eliminates the need for a front glass cutout for the biometrics sensor, this preserve a smooth-front industrial design and reduce total solution cost, added Synaptics.Synaptics' VFS6170 is sampling now, and is expected to enter mass production in the third quarter of 2015.Synaptics currently supplies the fingerprint sensors found in the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One Max.
