Countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are increasingly turning to biometric voting solutions to ensure free and fair elections.Earlier this month, The Democratic Republic of Congo selected Gemalto mobile biometric solutions for its next poll, while Botswana is set to adopt a biometric voting system by 2019.A report in the Southern African news noted that the trends is also being fuelled by a need to reduce the costs of problems that have been associated with a manual voter registration system. However, the report also notes that there are challenges in implementing the systems.”It requires adequate telecommunications and electricity infrastructure that is not only reliable but will work with the greatest efficiency during an election period,” an election commentator told the Southern African.Last September, GenKey announced that its biometric voter verification solution had been successfully deployed, with the cooperation of local partner STL, at the District Level Elections in Western Africa's Ghana.
