South Africa's Department of Home Affairs has launched a project that will see banks assist the government in the issuing of smart-card identity documents.Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said the project aims to enable the public to book appointments online and then have details captured at banks, so users can collect their smart card at the bank."By spring, we want people to be able to get into the Home Affairs website, log their details and apply for (IDs) or passports online", he added.Speaking at this year's State of the Nation Address in February, President Jacob Zuma said that South Africans would be able to apply for their eID cards at local banks, but without revealing which specific banks. So far, FNB and Standard Bank have signed on and provided sites where the ID card pilots will be rolled out.Following the launch of partnership with Gemalto in 2013, the department has issued over one million eIDs and has set out a target of issuing 1.6 million cards by the end of the 2014/15 financial year.Of the 403 Home Affairs offices, 110 are equipped with the necessary system for processing smart ID cards and new passports.
