Peruvian telecoms regulator Osiptel has announced that fingerprint data must be gathered from all customers purchasing pre-paid mobile phones. The new rule states that prepaid lines can only be activated once the user's fingerprint matches that on record at the country's national ID register, Reniec.Authorised distributors are required to progressively implement fingerprint ID systems until they become mandatory in all points of sale from 01 January 2017.The measure is part of the amendments to the Conditions of Use Regulations made by Osiptel, which also indicate that operators should check that the mobile terminal to be used by the buyer is not reported stolen or lost in the database managed by the regulator.
