A landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Peru’s National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC) and the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIIT-B), marking a significant step forward in digital identification systems in Peru.

Under the agreement, MOSIP- standing for Modular Open Source Identity Platform – will collaborate with RENIEC to execute a pilot program aiming to register 500-1000 individuals, utilising Peru’s existing infrastructure. This pilot is not only set to test the viability of MOSIP’s technology in Peru’s digital public infrastructure but also to pave the way for a broader, national rollout.

The initiative reflects a shared commitment between IIIT-B, MOSIP, and Peru to uphold data ownership principles, adhere to national laws, and follow global best practices in managing and protecting citizen’s information.

Dr. Carmen Velarde Koechlin, head of RENIEC, emphasised the partnership’s role in enhancing the management and security of identification processes for Peruvians, acknowledging MOSIP’s significant contribution to the nation’s digital landscape.

Prof. S. Rajagopalan, President of MOSIP, expressed his optimism for the programme’s success in Peru and its potential ripple effects across Latin America. He highlighted the Peruvian government’s trust in MOSIP as a testament to the platform’s dedication to advancing digital identity solutions worldwide.

This ground-breaking collaboration signifies MOSIP’s entry into Latin America, underlining a dedication to overcoming the unique challenges of the region through sophisticated technological solutions. With the pilot program underway, there is a hopeful outlook for the widespread adoption of digital ID systems, anticipated to benefit populations across Peru and beyond.
