Pakistan's Home Affairs Ministry Department is going to develop an Automated Fingerprints Information System (AFIS) for the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA). The system is to be implemented by June 2018 at a cost of Rs495 million ($4.6 million), reports The Express Tribune.At first, 40 AFIS scanners will be deployed at selected prisons of Punjab to build a database of prison inmates and at PFSA satellite stations established at divisional headquarters. The system will be upgradeable and can be upgraded as per requirement.In June, the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) revealed that it had developed an identification tool, Criminal Record Identifier (CRI), which has been installed in most of the police stations in Punjab.CRI is a coproduction of the Punjab Police and PITB. It is a fingerprint-based identification tool that compares the suspects' fingerprint to the central database of fingerprints.A similar database had already been in place at Crime Registration offices of Punjab Police. It had been used to identify suspects using fingerprints collected from the crime scene. Punjab Police had also purchased mega fingerprint matchers and were using the technology in search operations and checking at pickets.
