Biometric data operations have been restructured under the new leadership of DHS’ Chief Information Officer, Antoine McCord, who was appointed earlier this year. In March, McCord was appointed in charge of the department’s IT infrastructure, strategy and cybersecurity, which will now encompass a responsibility for the protection of biometric information in the Office of Biometric Identity Management.

The very aligned and invested IT biometric systems for government faculties, as well as the DHS and CBP, now have a unified head, as the seamless experience of using the technology across the board is reviewed. Chief Data Officer magazine reported the realignment of leadership can accelerate the delivery of the Homeland Advanced Recognition Technology (HART) programme to replace the existing automated biometric identification system, also known as IDENT.

The shift was architected by the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy at the White House – leading the Homeland Security Council – who is known for his immigration management measures. The decision was reached with the DHS and Homeland Security Council closely speaking together about the modernisation of travel and government functions with biometric technology and more investment opportunity that the CIO’s oversight will have.
