The Rivers State Government in Nigeria says it has saved 1billion naira (US$5m) in salaries and wages bill through a biometric exercise for all civil servants and public officers in the state.The exercise, which is still on-going, is expected to save more money for the state by targeting a “bloated” salary wage bill.Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, revealed the progress at the first Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce Business Luncheon.In February, the country's central bank noted that a centralized biometric identification system for the banking industry called the Bank Verification Number (BVN) had uncovered 23,306 ghost salaries being paid out.
