Nigeria plans to enrol 80 million citizen in the country's biometric database by 2016, senior officials have said.The outgoing Director General/CEO of the National Identity Management Commission NIMC, Barrister Chris Onyemenam made the projection last weekend.Onyemenam also said that a harmonization of biometric data between various ministries was fully underway, and that consolidation in particular with a biometrics-backed banking verification number was over 90 percent complete.”Although the harmonization will help populate the database, we also urge that the Federal Government will provide funding for data capture into the National Identity Data to enable the project which is currently in its pilot phase further progress rapidly,” he added.The goal of the Bank Verification Number (BVN) is to uniquely verify banking customers using fingerprints to prevent fraud and corruption.
