A major rollout of AI tools within the NHS App is set to optimise digital services for patients across the UK.
Designed to reduce lengthy waiting times and enhance care, the automated service will direct users to the most suitable care pathways from the outset. The administrative burden on healthcare staff will be alleviated through the widespread adoption of AI-powered “ambient voice” notetaking tools, which free up to a quarter of clinicians’ time to focus directly on patients.
The NHS is setting aside a £10 million funding plan over the next three years for digital, technology and data systems, which should deliver half of the commitments in the government’s 10 Year Health Plan.
The AI-powered tools passed a successful trial and is due to be rolled out to 200,000 patients within the next 12 months. After the initial trial in Sussex, the number of people queuing to make appointments over the phone reduced by 29%.
AI notetaking tools known as ambient voice technology free up a quarter of time with patients.
Sir Jim Mackey, Chief Executive of NHS England, said: “The major overhaul of tech we’re making over the next few years will transform services”.
“The new AI tool in the NHS App will help get patients to the best service for their needs first time – whether that’s a GP appointment, trip to a pharmacy or advice on caring for themselves at home – so that clinicians can make sure those most in need of a GP appointment can get one sooner”.
“We’re also seeing huge benefits from the introduction of AI notetaking tools, with clinicians finding they’re able to spend up to a quarter more of their time with patients, so we’re rolling out the tools as quickly as possible across the NHS”.
As the NHS launches its massive AI-driven overhaul, the reliance on automated triage and clinical notetaking raises a critical imperative: securing patient data and verifying user identity. For healthcare systems to embrace AI safely, they must first master digital trust. Identity Week America 2026 is the essential innovation ground for this transformation in healthcare, data security, and user identity. Join leading tech innovators and identity experts to explore the secure patient onboarding, decentralised identity frameworks, and strict data confidentiality protocols required to integrate AI safely into public infrastructure.
