As part of efforts to combat fraud and money laundering, Macau has said money can only be withdrawn from ATMs featuring face recognition.The ban, which starts on Tuesday, targets holders of the mainland-issued China UnionPay bank cards for whom hundreds of cash machines.Following a government directive, so far, 834 machines have been fitted with what the Macau Monetary Authority dubbed “Know Your Customer” technology.In a statement on its website, the authority said the move was designed to “protect the legal interests of financial institutions and mainland China UnionPay cardholders” and to “ensure the effectiveness of measures to monitor ATM cash withdrawals”.”Starting on July 4, the Monetary Authority of Macau is requesting those ATMs without 'Know-Your-Customer' techniques installed to suspend cash withdrawals services for mainland [UnionPay] cards,” it added.A banking industry executive, who requested anonymity, said he had “seen many, many people avoiding the newly equipped ATM machines”.
