Laser engraving technology provided by Italy's IXLA is an important part of security features for Uruguay's electronic ID card, according to industry reports. The Uruguay government is deploying desktop card printer units developed by IXLA across the whole country, reported Industrial Laser Solutions. The ID 5 printer can laser-engrave polycarbonate and PVC cards, as well as encode smart cards, magnetic cards, and RFID cards. The report adds that it is part of a family of products focused in the laser engraving technology to provide governments with secure IDs and passports under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. In January, Gemalto revealed that is set to deliver its Sealys eID card and Coesys Issuance solution to the Ministry of Interior of Uruguay for the country's eID (Documento de Identidad) programme. The microprocessor in the polycarbonate card provides strong user authentication and digital signature for the country's comprehensive suite of eGovernment services.
