Security firm AVG has revealed glasses at Pepcom in Barcelona that can disrupt facial recognition technology being used by cameras and Facebook. The glasses use infrared LEDs that are placed around the eyes and the nose areas which are completely invisible to human eyes.Because cameras are sensitive to the wavelengths of these LEDs, the LEDs can break face detection. However, the firm states that one drawback of the approach is that many cellphone camera sensors now have an infrared filter strong enough to cut off any wavelengths beyond the visible spectrum. In response to this, AVG's glasses are also covered in a retro-reflective material that directs the light from a camera flash directly back at a camera so the resulting image is overexposed and obscured. But the firm admits that a noticeable drawback of this approach is that it only works with flash photography. Otherwise, not enough light will be sent back to distort the camera sensor, and a camera with higher dynamic range can be used to minimize the darkening of the subject.
