Delhi has passed a law that gives security forces access to the country's biometrics-backed ID database. The Aadhaar Bill gives federal agencies access to the world's biggest biometric database in the interests of national security.Critics now say that the change could impact on privacy and surveillance.”It has been showcased as a tool exclusively meant for disbursement of subsidies and we do not realise that it can also be used for mass surveillance,” said Tathagata Satpathy, a lawmaker from Odisha, to Reuters. Over 1 billion people are enrolled in the Aadhaar database scheme, which started seven years ago.So far it has been used to streamline payment of benefits and cut down on massive wastage and fraud.
