The International Biometric Group has won a $2.7 million contract to continue development of behavioural biometrics systems which the US Department of Defence (DoD) says are crucial for its future security.IBG, a Novetta Solutions Company, will research and development an active authentication API with the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The latter commissions advanced research for the DoD at West Point. The DARPA AA Program aims to develop novel behavioral- and cognitive-based biometric modalities that can validate users' identities on a continuous basis. The algorithms which are being developed will identify people by recognising the way a person uses desktops or mobile devices.”The Department of Defense (DoD) faces a serious and critical threat to its information systems. The current PKI/CAC infrastructure has been proven to fail at providing the level of identity attestation required by DoD”, wrote the contract documents.”This program is designed to provide an alternative authentication process for DoD that addresses the critical flaws in the current system.”The IBG team will work closely with other DARPA Biometric researchers, responsible for the development of the behavioral biometrics, and the Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC).The API will consist of: A secure container for behavioral/cognitive-based and traditional biometric sensors and analysis engine applications and sensor data fusion algorithms to support a multi-modality Active Authentication platform and cryptographic algorithms. It will also use protocols using biometrics features to support the ability to transmit and receive data security using a key exchange that is client-verified.Darpa has been working on active authentication since 2011. IBG has won similar contracts to work on the tech every year since the project's launch.
