More stringent passport checks and security measures could be introduced at the border between Gibraltar and Spain, officials have told local media. The changes follow an amendment in the Schengen Border code approved by the Commission last December. The issue is related to the fact that while automated gates put in place by Spain can read British passports, this isn't the case for new ID cards issued in Gibraltar. The Chronicle reports there is a fear in Gibraltar that although there are some exceptions in the rules for cross-border communities, Spain could theoretically use them as legal cover if it were to put pressure at the border following Brexit.
