Several recommendations have been proposed by the The UK’s Office for Statistics Regulation to improve user engagement with the Gambling Commission’s Gambling Survey, assessing gambling behaviours in Great Britain.
Ben Haden, Director of Research and Statistics at the Gambling Commission, said: “We welcome the findings from OSR, both the public statement regarding casework they have received in relation to GSGB and their overall review of the GSGB.”
User engagement will be critical to the GSGB’s ongoing success, scrutinising how many gambling operators have met regulations such as identity verification requirements.
The scrutiny on collecting gambling statistics suggests potential regulatory changes that may affect identity verification requirements for gambling operators. The review’s recommendations are likely to change how surveys are carried out and impact how gaming operators approach their responsible gambling duty to customers.
The gambling industry has been a target for flexible identity verification solutions that can accommodate different user capabilities whilst ensuring more safety through regulation to minimise the risks of gambling harm.
“Data in this report represents the first year of a new baseline, against which future changes can be compared and as such will prove invaluable in deepening further our understanding of gambling across the country,” said Tim Miller, Executive Director of Research and Policy.
