The Department of Social Protection and Family Affairs in Ireland has used facial recognition to detect a person using two social security numbers.Iraqi national Hiadar Alnoor, aged 39, with an address at Elm Park, Wilton, Cork, yesterday pleaded guilty to a charge of obtaining a PPS number in another name at the Intreo Centre, Kings Inns St, Dublin, on March 15, 2013.Solicitor Frank Buttimer said he had spoken to the defendant for an hour and could not establish any advantage accruing to him in having two PPS numbers. However, the offence carries a maximum fine of €1,500 and/or six months in prison. The accused had no previous convictions.In June, Ireland's police announced that the service will be granted access to face recognition technology as part of a five-year modernisation programme.The biometric tech was included in details of the modernisation programme of the Gardai, a term for Ireland's National Police Service, which includes US$226m to be spent on ICT.
