Channel Tunnel rail operator Eurostar has announced a challenge for industry suppliers to develop ideas and solutions to enable hundreds of thousands of passengers and their baggage to be security screened, using new, innovative methods and technologies. The operator states that recent events have raised new security challenges, while creating new opportunities for industry to develop innovative rail security solutions. "We would like to provide industry with an early opportunity to develop and test ideas in a real-life operational environment."The operator has released a Challenge Brief (see link below) that sets out the current situation and desired outcomes. It also details a set of complicating factors and constraints to help industry suppliers better understand its operating environment."As Eurostar's route network continues to expand, it need to develop new and better ways of improving the passenger experience, increase customer satisfaction levels and continue to deliver the high standards of security our customers expect. "In 2015, we launched new routes, including destinations such as Avignon, Lyon and Marseille. However, passengers travelling from these new destinations to the UK are required to disembark at Lille in order to be screened prior to continuing on their onward journey through the Channel Tunnel and on to their final destination in the UK."Understandably, this is not popular with passengers and we are keen to identify the right partner(s) to work with Eurostar to deliver at least the same, if not better, levels of security and avoid passengers having to disembark and be screened at one of our hubs".The company's Challenge Brief sets out the process it is undertaking to engage interested industry suppliers. It will hold a Supplier Engagement Event in London on 17 December 2015 to provide an opportunity to ask questions and clarify requirements.Following the challenge event, the company will incorporate feedback and solicit proposals for evaluation by its project steering group. Eurostar's aim is to deploy the new process/solution to its customers in Spring 2017.
