The Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) says it has saved US$13.6 million as a result of distributing some 700,000 eID card readers to government to public and private sector organisations.Eida said in a statement that it had launched a mass distribution of 700,000 card readers in the last 18 months to maximise use of the identity card and make it the principal document of individual identification in both the public and private sectors."The smart devices distributed and software applications installed are in line with the authority strategy 2014-2016 which focuses on connection and integration and boost the use of the ID cards in all sectors of the country as the main identity verification document."The authority stressed that card readers had been distributed for free, except for commercial entities."The use of the card readers will help establishments ascertain individual identities of their customers more reliably and much faster, saving money and time as well as simplifying procedures," wrote the Eida.It also noted that services available at the card readers' portal, include ID and fingerprints readers software applications, detailed presentation of all types of card readers which are compatible with the ID systems or recommended by the authority."
