The Dutch digital identification service iDIN, operated by Currence, has been acquired by the Belgian identity app itsme.
From mid-2026, consumers will be able to identify themselves using the itsme app alongside their bank app through iDIN. The iDIN service will remain available for at least two more years.
iDIN is an initiative of Currence, a collaboration between the major Dutch banks. It enables people in the Netherlands to securely identify themselves via their bank app when accessing online services from retailers, insurers and other digital providers. For approximately 300 connected websites, iDIN offers reliable identity verification while eliminating the need to maintain separate login systems. Currently, around 13 million people in the Netherlands can use iDIN.
itsme is an independent company founded by Belgian banks and telecom operators. It is a well-established digital identity provider and is recognised as a European identity solution at the highest level of assurance under the eIDAS regulation. The app is widely known for its ease of use, accessibility and strong security standards.
In Belgium, itsme serves not only as a digital identity for commercial services, similar to iDIN, but also for government platforms, comparable to DigiD in the Netherlands. More than 80 percent of the adult Belgian population actively uses and trusts the app. The acquisition of iDIN represents itsme’s first major expansion beyond Belgium.
The transition from iDIN to itsme will begin in spring 2026, once the agreed conditions have been met, and is expected to be completed in 2028. From June 2026, consumers will be able to log in to connected services using the itsme app in addition to iDIN. By 2028, iDIN will be fully integrated into itsme. Consumers and connected organisations will be informed at every stage of the integration process.
The acquisition of iDIN by itsme creates a future-proof digital identity solution that aligns with European regulations and responds to the growing demand for secure online identification. It strengthens trust among both consumers and organisations in digital transactions.
“With iDIN, the banks have provided a secure and trusted digital identification solution for the past ten years. Now we are taking the next step. itsme has a strong track record, meets all regulatory requirements and has a clear focus on innovation, making it the ideal partner to prepare iDIN for the future.”
Tom Van Den Bosch, CEO of itsme, added:
“With the acquisition of iDIN, we strengthen our position as the European standard for digital identity. iDIN is a trusted name in the Netherlands, and by joining forces we are building a future-ready solution that combines ease of use with the highest international standards. Our ambition is clear: a strong and reliable digital identity for everyone, everywhere, at all times.”
