Danish citizens have been granted control to verify themselves digitally and prove their age via the official new ID app, AltID.
AltID is not expected to replace Denmark’s landscape of digital public tools such as MitID, Rejsekort, or the digital health card, but it will work with the existing MitID system.
From today, Danes will get access to store age certificates and digital ID documents, without having to hand over excessive amounts of personal data including their name, address and CPR number.
The app is available to anyone over the age of 13 who already has MitID and a Danish CPR number. Users will create a photo ID card and age proof credential, as well as credentials expected to arrive in later updates.
After downloading MitID, users can verify their identity and transfer their photo from the passport chip to the wallet using Signicat’s high-assurance NFC-based passport verification technology, ReadID.
Denmark’s transition from MitID to the new AltID digital identity wallet illustrates the global shift toward credential-based, privacy-enhancing identification. This new system, designed for both online and offline use, offers a crucial case study in how to securely implement selective disclosure and maintain citizen trust while complying with EUDI standards. ALtID will be Denmark’s national EU Digital Identity Wallet in accordance with the eIDAS regulation, which will roll out and be interoperable with other solutions across Europe.
