Maryland mobile ID is now being accepted for purchasing alcohol at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, a live events venue hosting thousands of concert-goers. 300,000 residents in Maryland can use the digital ID, which links to the Mobile ID Check by MD app, for confirmation of their identity. The process is especially abiding by privacy regulations to minimise the data captured on the user’s terms to verify their identity.

The director of JL Hospitality, the food and drinks supplier to the venue, said all steps were being taken “towards innovation in responsible service” and preventing sales to under-21s who do not have the ID; although any age can possess a digital ID in Maryland. As well as accepting IDs from other states, individuals can be admitted into the venue on the basis of fully knowing their identity and that they pose no risk to the public in a maximum capacity venue.

The technology, endorsed by many states that now issue a driver’s licence or mobile ID, shows “significant” potential to “reduce fraud, prevent counterfeiting, and ultimately streamline transaction times” with age verification.

The states that have issued mobile ID or have plans to include Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, Ohio, Hawaii, California, and Iowa. Travellers from these participating states, including Maryland, can use digital IDs at TSA’s checkpoints.
