A Chinese security firm is working with a government ministry on face recognition security solutions that could be deployed at the country's airports.Tong Hui, a manager at Shanghai Doudian Technologies, told the Shanghai Daily this week that the tech his firm is developing would boost security and limit illegal immigration. His company is working with the Third Research Institute of the Ministry of Public Security to develop the system.Pictures of passengers' faces at security checkpoints and stores them in a database along with their boarding pass information. When passengers submit their passes for scanning as they board their flight, a camera at the boarding gate captures their images again and compares their facial features with photos taken previously, said Tong.”The ticket gates will open automatically only when facial features match,” he said.In March, Japanese officials confirmed that the Tokyo government will be deploying a facial recognition system at airports to strengthen its ability to catch terrorists trying to sneak into the country. While photographing the face of every incoming foreigner already is part of the passport control system at Narita, Haneda and other Japanese airports, the new facial recognition system will allow those photos to be compared instantly against images of terrorists.
