Travellers entering the United States can now use a newly designed mobile application that offers a more user-friendly interface and requires less personal data. Features from the previous CBP Home app – which will now be used exclusively for self-deportation – have been integrated into this updated border entry tool. Digital credentials aim to reduce the amount of personal data passengers must share with airlines and travel operators. However, prioritising selective disclosure takes a back seat to maintaining safety and security.

Travelers, businesses, and other stakeholders will have access to a single digital solution, CBP Link, for applying for an I-94 as a Visa Waiver Program traveller, or to check border wait times. The update to the traveller’s data will be automatic once the CBP Link app is downloaded on a mobile device and will not require the traveller to make any changes themselves. The CBP Home mobile app will be used to self-deport “unlawfully present aliens”, meanwhile quashing their travel costs and civil fines or penalties they may have incurred for not leaving the country.
