Media focus on new US entry requirements could lead to increased demands for new passports in the UK.Under new rules introduced to counter terror attacks, the US late last year said only biometric passports were acceptable for visa-waiver countries.The US now insists 27 countries whose citizens enjoy visa-free travel – including the UK – issue passports with biometric chips.The new rule came into effect on 1 April, so any Brits holding one of the old-style documents that lack an electronic chip could be turned away this summer.Indeed, prospective US visitors are not even permitted to board flights to the US.
