The Biometrics Institute has awarded a contract to Lockstep Consulting for a feasibility study into developing a “trust mark” that would aim to boost consumer and public confidence in systems using biometric technology. The institute will now conduct consultations with its members and key stakeholders through the feasibility process, which is envisaged to start in February and be completed in March. The main outcome of the report will be to determine how a Biometrics Institute Trust Mark, which should be issued for a biometric product or services, will work.Last October, Ted Dunstone, Chair, Technical Committee, Biometrics Institute, told Planet Biometrics that support for the scheme has been received by a major US as well as several Australian government agencies – including Australia's largest welfare provider.”Privacy and building trust in biometric technologies has been top of the agenda for the Biometrics Institute since its foundation in October 2001″, said Isabelle Moeller, Chief Executive of the Biometrics Institute,”The Trust Mark shall give consumers confidence in the responsible use of an identity product or services. Creating consumer trust in why their biometric information is being collected and how it is handled, stored and potentially deleted is essential for the success of this industry”.Hon. Terry Aulich, Head of the Biometric Institute's Privacy Expert Group, said the envisioned study will create a “road map” towards implekmenting the trust mark.”The Trust Mark will focus on privacy, it will be international, have strong governance, establish trust, give a practical benefit to members and be financially supportable. “The Institute is grappling with the challenge between creating a simple model which would encourage member to sign up, and a model that ensures rigour and credibility in the trust mark.A trust mark would only be valid for a year, and to gain the trust mark the organisation would have to be a member of the Biometrics Institute. The Institute said there could be a technical assessment after the biometric system has been implemented to check whether safeguards have been adhered to.
