The Supreme Court in Bangladesh has rejected a legal attempt to block biometric registration of SIMs using fingerprints. The bench of justices Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and AKM Shahidul Huq gave its decision on Tuesday after disposing of a petition challenging the legality of the move. It, however, instructed the authorities to strictly follow the telecom regulator's directives. In its observation, the court stressed the maximum precaution in protecting citizens' data and measures to prevent any sort of abuse.SIM cards are no longer being sold without the buyer's fingerprints, while the re-registration of existing SIM-card owners by recording their fingerprints is set to continue until April. The SIM re-registration process, which began on Dec 16 last year, is aimed at controlling crime committed using SIM cards registered under false names. On Mar 9 this year, a petition, filed by lawyer SM Enamul Haque, argued that only the government or a statutory body could collect such data, but in this case private companies were being allowed to so.
