Bangladeshi authorities have warned that mobile operators can be fined up to 3 billion taka (US$38.3 million) for misuse of subscribers' fingerprints gathered as part of a verification scheme.This decision was taken during Monday's cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh HasinaThe cabinet has also given assurances that biometric fingerprints in the re-registration process of mobile operator's SIM cards will not be misused.The assurance came from the regular cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the secretariat.On 21 March, major Bangladesh telecoms operator Grameenphone said it had reached 23 million biometric verifications for SIMs under the government-backed programme.The biometric drive follows a government scheme to re-register all mobile phone subscribers, with the customer's NID and fingerprint also verified by the Election commission (EC) against the EC's Database.
