Kempegowda International Airport in India's Bangalore city has become the first airport in the country to install automated eGates.Passengers show a barcoded paper or mobile boarding pass at the eGate, which opens automatically. The relevant details are also displayed on the associated screen inbuilt into the eGate. The passengers proceed for the mandatory security check and thereafter, enter the Security Hold Area (SHA).The eGate unit has been provided by the German firm Kaba."This is being deployed on selected flights only for one lane and will progressively expand in scope subject to mandatory government clearances," noted a statement from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which runs Kempegowda International Airport.G V Sanjay Reddy, Managing Director, BIAL, said, "Bengaluru is a great location for us to pioneer new technology initiatives, with a traveler who is IT-savvy, young and excited about independent processes. The intent is to provide all passengers services that define the technological prowess and is a reflection of the city the airport is in. The e-Gate is a definite step towards a fully automated and seamless passenger flow. As we grow beyond 15 million passengers annually, we are thankful to MOCA, BCAS and CISF for their collaboration to effectively bring this technology trial to KIAB."Last November, officials said the airport would also this year host trials of a project that would see passenger data verified against biometrics-backed Unique Identification Authority of India numbers, or Aadhaar, with UIDAI, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Kempegowda International Airport Limited (KIAL) all working together"."Self Service biometric kiosks and a display unit for the CISF at the airport will be connected to an eKYC Server of UIDAI at its Bangalore Regional Office for instant authentication, said officials, adding that he service will be fully automated, and KYC data will be furnished in real-time.
