Australia's federal police and foreign affairs department have connected to a new face recognition system that links to immigration records. The face verification service (FVS) enables law enforcement agencies to share citizens' facial images to verify identities and identify unknown individuals.Justice Minister Michael Keenan has said the first phase of the platform – allowing DFAT and the AFP access to images on citizenship applications held by Immigration so they can verify identities – was now live. The minister said the capability to share images was necessary given the higher-quality fraudulent identity documents being produced by criminals. He released a government report on identity theft.”We know that people previously convicted of terrorism offences in Australia have used false identities to assist in planning terrorist attacks. This includes purchasing ammunition and chemicals to make explosives and pre-paid mobile phones to communicate anonymously,” Minister Keenan said. The Government will also be able to use the system to identify unknown suspects of serious crimes like terrorism, money-laundering, murder and child sexual exploitation.
