Security Document World talks to Alan Hodgson, consultant, Alan Hodgson Consulting, UK.Alan is a speaker at SDW 2015.What will your presentation be covering at this year's SDW 2015 event? The presentation will cover the key issues around the use of inkjet printers to add secure personalisation onto paper based visa documents. It will examine this topic from very much a user perspective, in 3 key areas.• The practical issues around the handling of the documents immediately after printing.• The security advantages provided by ink penetration into the paper.• The differences in IR visibility provided by various inkjet inks in use in this application area. The presentation will be illustrated by results from a number of inkjet ink sets in use for these applications. Practical tests for all 3 of these areas will be suggested and demonstrated. Why do you think this is an important topic? The choice of inkjet engines available continues to evolve. The commercial drivers on desktop inkjet printer manufacturers may be diverging from Security Printing. For Governments seeking to define their next visa issuance system the implications of this will need to be considered. For manufacturers of bespoke visa personalisation printers this may also provide a commercial opportunity. If there is one thing you would like our attendees to take away from your presentation, what would that be?The importance of considering the application as a system (paper, security print, inkjet personalisation) will be the key message. This presentation seeks to define the key criteria that should be considered when making a choice of inkjet systems for visa personalisation, and the implications of this for the design of the paper visa. What do you envisage the burning topics being in your field over the next 12 months? The continuing evolution of both the paper visas and the inkjet systems suggests that an international concerted effort should be taken to standardise some elements of the personalisation system. Other inkjet application areas have sought the use of International Standards and the time may be ripe to consider such an initiative for inkjet personalisation in Security Printing.
