Reaching new milestones for biometric authentication, Aadhaar system will press forward to forecast the vision to be achieved by 2032.
The ‘Aadhaar Vision 2032’ framework will encapsulate Aadhaar’s planned evolution through the next decade, as the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) recognises the rapidly changing technological and regulatory landscape.
The UIDAI has initiated a Technological and Strategic Review to shape the future of Digital ID, and instructed an Expert Committee to guide the roadmap towards ensuring the platform remains “robust, inclusive, and future-ready”.
The Aadhaar system is a paperless infrastructure that has strived to bring technological excellence, innovation and public trust to citizens, although it has overcome questions along the way of Aadhaar’s robustness to protect data during breaches and mis-matching data issues. It is a biometric technology that took centre stage at Identity Week Europe this year, as Kapil Jambhulkar described its 12-year digital transformation.
UIDAI’s technology stack, which forms the backbone of Aadhaar services and works as a facilitator of the digital economy, is also set for a major upgrade, the UIDAI announced. It will focus on aligning emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, Quantum, and advanced encryption and harnessing deep-tech.
Aadhaar has grown into one of the world’s largest digital identity programmes, issuing over 1.4 billion unique ID numbers to Indian residents since its launch. In 2024 alone, the Aadhaar ecosystem enabled 150 billion cumulative transactions. And a little over 10 years ago citizenship was difficult to present through any valid documentation; the majority of India’s population lacked any form of official identification.
The Chair of the UIDAI, Shri Neelkanth Mishra, will lead the high-level Expert Committee, bringing together minds from key experts and leaders in academia, industry, and administration to provide strategic direction on strengthening Aadhaar.
The committee will develop the Aadhaar Vision 2032 document, outlining the framework for next-generation Aadhaar architecture aligned with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act.
The statement said: “The Vision 2032 roadmap is not only about sustaining technological leadership but also about reinforcing Aadhaar’s role as a secure, inclusive, and people-centric digital identity”.
UIDAI’s “Aadhaar Vision 2032” roadmap, embracing AI, blockchain, and quantum technologies, mirrors the focus at Identity Week Europe on innovative identity solutions, trusted digital credentials, and future-ready governance. By modernising India’s identity ecosystem while prioritising privacy, security, and inclusivity, it showcases how large-scale identity programs can transform service delivery, inspire global best practices, and fuel discussions on the responsible deployment of next-generation identity technologies.
