A new border management IT system and e-visa website are now deployed at Port Vila International Airport, co-funded between the Government of Vanuatu and Japan and the International Organisation for Migration.

MIDAS has expanded to three more airports as a top priority for each government, who self-funded pilots for the system before it was implemented on 17 June. Security operations at Port Vila seaport, Santo International Airport and Santo seaport will significantly benefit from installing a greater capacity data system to enable identities to be cross-referenced and matched.

Japan made a significant contribution to the sustainability of MIDAS operations, building the MIDAS Training Room and the new immigration office at Port Vila seaport to continue some physical checks by human resources alongside technology.

The infrastructure activity was implemented in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.

Ambassador of Japan to Vanuatu, His Excellency Naohisa OKUDA commented that the process was government-led in developing countries.

In addition to the launch of MIDAS, the Government of Vanuatu has implemented the eVisa system to simplify visa applications and enhance the country’s border management.

The successful rollout of the MIDAS and eVisa systems is a testament to the commitment and dedication of the Vanuatu Government and its partners.
