Physical IDs are the “trust route for every other type of ID”, with biometric markers to check against the individual, says Tjörvi Einarsson, Program Manager of ID & Travel Documents at Registers Iceland.

In Iceland, physical IDs are still required for the development of digital IDs and wallets. Our Editor asks whether altering the design of ID documents over time has contributed to their security.

“Yes, it does. Because we used the new ICAO TD1 standard with the vertical layout, so the portrait picture is quite a lot larger which makes it easier for everyone to compare the photo to the bearer”.

He discussed maintaining a simple passport design for any user, not just trained professionals, to spot authentic documents from frauds.
