Sofia Airport has introduced electronic boarding pass self-scanning at Terminal 2. This development, effective from March 6, comes as Bulgaria prepares for its partial entry into the Schengen zone on March 31.
The new system is designed to enhance efficiency during security checks and reduce waiting times by allowing travellers to self-check their boarding passes, marking a significant upgrade in Bulgarian airport facilities. The enhancement is part of the country’s broader efforts to streamline travel procedures in anticipation of entering the Schengen Area, which facilitates passport-free travel among EU member states.
According to Novinite and SchengenVisaInfo.com, the implementation signifies Sofia Airport’s commitment to leveraging modern technology to boost traveller satisfaction and operational efficiency. Jesus Caballero, CEO of the company managing Sofia Airport, highlighted the airport’s readiness for Schengen integration, noting that the new self-scanning system, along with other enhancements, would enable over two-thirds of passengers to pass through its terminals more rapidly.
This announcement also follows reports that Sofia Airport handled 3.4 million passengers in the first half of 2023, anticipating increased volumes upon Schengen accession. The transition will also see a modification in procedures for arriving passengers, with those from Schengen countries proceeding directly to baggage claim, while bypassing passport control, thereby simplifying travel processes for internationals.
