At Identity Week America 2025, Marcelo Mota, CIO of Aian Luanda Airport, discussed how identity technologies are shaping the future of air travel. Highlighting the rapid growth in passenger numbers, projected to reach 8 billion by 2037, he emphasised that technology is essential to manage demand efficiently while maintaining security and a seamless passenger experience.
1. Has the travel industry achieved seamless data integration across stakeholders?
Not yet. Marcelo Mota highlighted that multiple systems across airlines, airports, and government agencies currently operate on different infrastructures and data requirements, creating integration challenges. However, industry efforts are underway to develop collaborative frameworks that will allow secure, real-time data exchange, reduce costs, and enable systems to work seamlessly.
2. How are identity technologies improving both trust and convenience in airport operations?
Identity technologies help airports process passengers quickly while ensuring security, improving both convenience and trust. By verifying passenger identities and safeguarding data, these technologies enable a smooth experience without compromising safety, balancing operational efficiency with security standards.
3. What role does the human workforce play in today’s identity security processes?
The human factor remains critical. Trained staff operate advanced equipment, enforce procedures, and maintain a strong security culture. Humans can enable the system or, if poorly trained, introduce risk. Marcelo emphasised that technology alone cannot function without skilled personnel ensuring compliance and operational integrity.
4. How critical is advanced passenger information (API) for streamlining secure identity checks on the day of travel?
API is essential. Receiving passenger data in advance allows authorities to assess risk, verify identities, and profile travellers before they arrive at security checkpoints. This pre-screening ensures efficient, secure processing, enabling a smoother travel experience for passengers.
