Biometric border checks which were due to be activated on November 1 at the Port of Dover have stalled until after the festive season.
This means the operation of the Entry/Exit System for tourist passengers crossing Dover is delayed. From 12 October 2025, some EU Member States progressively began registering the data of non-EU nationals crossing external borders for short stays, as defined as up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
A grace period is in place until April 2026 by which time all member states are expected to have mitigated the complexities of delivering fully biometric checks.
The Port of Dover said they are working closely with the French border agency to ensure a “smooth introduction” of the EES for tourist passengers in early 2026 and still take advantage of the early doors period.
They are keen to minimise any disruption for passengers in the lead up to Christmas.
The implementation of EES for coach, freight and foot passengers in October resulted in nearly 13,000 biometric profiles being successfully created. The joint planning process and testing with the French border authorities has ensured the intended target of registrations was surpassed. Since 12 October, Dover profiles accounted for 30% of all registrations made by French seaports.
“Together, we are confident this partnership approach will deliver an efficient and positive experience for passengers as the full EES programme comes online”, said the Port of Dover.
“Passengers are advised to stay informed via updates from their ferry operator as the rollout approaches and to allow extra time for their journey during the transition period”.
