Children aged 7 or over, who were registered under Aadhaar ID system when they were below the age of five, must update their biometrics or face being removed from the database. The Unique Identification Authority of India is driving enforcement of biometric data capture and addressing personal user IDs which need to be refreshed after a time period. Parents or guardians were issued a reminder via SMS message to mobile numbers registered in the Aadhaar to update their children’s information at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra or designated Aadhaar centre.

The exercise is mandatory to “maintain the accuracy and reliability of biometric data of children” and services enabled through Aadhaar may be cut off if the rules are not followed.

The first round of biometrics including fingerprints, iris and photo is required when a child enrolled in Aadhaar reaches the age of 5, however in their earlier years biometric collection is too premature.

General information including photograph, name, date of birth, gender, address and documents of proof is processed during enrolment.

If the child performs the Mandatory Biometrics Update (MBO) between the age of five and seven years, there is no cost. But after seven years of age, there is a prescribed fee of Rs. 100 only.
