The road ahead for mDLs: Progress, challenges, and potential
Identity Week America 2026 is due to spotlight the advances in REAL compliant digital ID right across America, with the rapid expansion of mobile driving licences, integration with digital wallets, and concrete REAL ID standards. More states are being entrusted to issue digital IDs and driving licences that are accepted at participating TSA airports. The adoption rate of mDLs across different states is headed up by users that are increasingly demanding digital licences to be stored on smartphone devices.
A driving licence within a mobile wallet is capable of being updated in real time and contains the same data elements used to produce a physical driving licence.
