Spanish airports are ready to implement the Entry/Exit System and biometric registrations for travellers arriving to the country via Palma de Mallorca.
They will now be required under the wave of fresh data rules to face an automated entry system, starting on November 19, that completes biometric screening of non-EU nationals.
Modernising border entry to member states has been the united ambition of the EU Commission and eu-LISA, working collaboratively with Member States and the travel sector to advance smarter external border security while facilitating legitimate travel.
EU Member States have progressively begun registering the data of non-EU nationals crossing external borders for short stays; defined as up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Each country can determine which border crossing points will activate the system first, allowing a gradual adjustment for border authorities, transport operators and travellers.
Palma’s EES launch follows other Spanish airports like Menorca.
The new system aims to modernise and speed up border controls. It allows travellers to provide their information in advance, reduces waiting times at border checks, and helps authorities monitor irregular migration. By collecting fingerprint and facial recognition data, EES also strengthens security in the Schengen Area and aids law enforcement in preventing identity fraud and other serious crimes.
