Offline access is evolving user experiences of Italy’s IT-wallet. The new feature for the wallet, used by over 5 million users, will mitigate connection issues and provide easier access to digital documents such as driving licence, health insurance card, and European Disability card in remote locations.
The Department for Digital Transformation in Italy, in collaboration with PagoPA S.p.A. and the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, announced they are responding to the “concrete needs of users” who have “activated nearly 9 million documents” in the app.
Simply by updating IO, citizens will be able to access their e-documents and public services, increasing user experiences and overall app engagement. With the second draft of the eIDAS regulation focused on digital wallets as the future of trust services, soon every EU state and its citizens will adopt a solution that harnesses security, user experience and interoperability together.
Italian developers are getting closer to the full implementation of the IT Wallet system. With a lack of connection, or infrastructure issues, the IO app detects the offline status of the device and activates a limited version using biometric authentication or PIN code to login.
If connection is lost, due to a remote location or unstable network, documents stored in the wallet section are validated based on the last time the app was online.
The IO feature shows promise for growing wallet adoption, over 5.3 million individual active users since its release on 4 December 2024.
Overall, 8.9 million digital documents have been accessed in the app’s Wallet, showing widespread adoption among citizens. Of them, 4.6 million are digital Health Insurance Cards, followed by 4.2 million digital Driving Licences. The use of Disability Cards is also increasing, with over 100,000 cards digitised.
